Digital Product Passport (DPP)

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a key instrument of the EU Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR, EU 2024/1781) designed to promote transparency and a circular economy. It compiles product-related data—such as material composition, origin, carbon footprint (PCF), reparability, and recyclability—so that it can be accessed digitally, typically via a QR code located directly on the product and its packaging.

This enables consumers, businesses, and authorities to access reliable sustainability information along the entire value chain.

The battery passport is the first mandatory DPP. Starting February 18, 2027, it will be required under the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) for traction batteries, LMT batteries, and industrial batteries exceeding 2 kWh, including information on carbon footprint, recycled content, and collection.

The textile passport will follow on the basis of the ESPR: the delegated act is expected for 2027, with mandatory application anticipated from 2029 onward. Textiles are considered a priority product group; requirements will include fiber composition, origin, and recyclability.
